Word of the Day: Lieutenant. “The British [“leftenant”] pronunciation […] may have originated from a mistaken reading of the ‘u’ as a ‘v’ [or] from a fanciful etymology which associated it with the verb ‘to leave’, as the lieutenant only took up his duties once his superior officer had ‘left’.”

Dans le genre idiot, « love » s'écrivait avec un 'u', initialement, mais ça faisait trop de jambages dans une écriture gothique, donc on a mis un 'o' à la place, tout en gardant la prononciation du 'u'. Pareil pour « son » (mais pas « sun », qui a gardé son 'u' pour une prononciation rigoureusement identique), et il y en a encore quelques autres dans le genre.
