John Irving, The World According To Garp
Ah. Yes.
So that must be what they call a “The Great American Novel”. I guess I finally understood how other people’s talent can paralyze you — well, I already knew that, in so many other fields, but I hadn’t recently read anything good enough for me to be in that position. Right now, I can very hardly imagine myself being bold enough to write a novel.
Fortunately, I have a nice quote to cling on so I can get started, and there are lots of crappy writers I can read in order to feel better about myself.
Fortunately, I never intended to write 600-page monuments telling the story of a family over three generations, and at the same time discussing our society, and the whole human condition.
Fortunately, I never expected to become a writer, but just to have books published.
And tomorrow will be another day, and tomorrow I finally won’t be reading that book anymore.

Coïncidence, je viens de télémuler le film la semaine dernière, un véritable plaisir à voir aussi.
Cela faisait 10 ans que je voulais acheter ce film introuvable aujourd'hui, merci la mule.

AH là là, c'est aussi un de mes bouquins cultes ! Et du coup, lis "la conjuration des imbéciles" de John Kennedy Toole si tu ne l'as pas déjà fait. Tu aimeras à coup sûr !!! On se retrouve tous dans cette garleie de personnages, et surtout le destin de l'écrivain a de quoi faire réfléchir.
On ne rencontre que peu de bouquins qui remuent autant. J'ai de la chance, je suis en train de finir un de ceux-là. Ce bouquin que je termine est un roman américain comme eux seuls savent les pondre. Génial ! (Les extraordinaires aventures de Kavalier et Clay de Michael Chabon)

Oui, oui, il faut dire que je ne te connais absolument pas. :-) C'était une simple manière de parler, certes pas très finaude, je suis d'accord. ;-)

A l'appui de Matoo, La Conjuration des imbéciles est quand même exceptionnel(le).
Le lecteur ne sait plus très bien à la fin s'il plaint le héros (repoussant) et lui donne raison contre cette société intolérante, ou si décidemment ce héros est vraiment trop con pour être autorisé à vivre. De grands moments de rire et de compassion.
PS: Hot-dog et gin-tonic, mes nourritures cheap de prédilection depuis la Conjuration des imbéciles et le Guide intergalactique...

Pour exciter ta curiosité: le titre était prémonitoire: Toole n'a pas réussi à le faire publier et s'est suicidé à 32 ans. Sa mère a mis 10 ans à trouver un éditeur (grâce à Walker Percy dont je recommande "Le Syndrome de Thanatos"). Le livre a eu le prix Pulitzer l'année suivante.
