Veronica Mars 1.20–1.22  

I can’t say the finale was disappointing, since the whole season had this casual aspect, making it rather unlikely it would end up in a big existentialist drama. And they avoided the worst pitfalls, but… well, let’s say it’s not a masterpiece, but “only” a well-written mix of 90210 and Murder, She Wrote — and, yes, that’s already a lot.

I was afraid the rape story would end in a twist, being just a prank; we were spared that (even though the flashback only revealed the discarded panties, it would have been hard believing a girl could surrepticiously test her father’s paternity and yet be fooled into thinking she’d lost her virginity — which makes me realize, her father, the best private eye in the world who can definitely put two and two together, should assume she go test results of her own before he did), but not by much. No, it wasn’t a rape, it was just consensual sex between two soulmates, except for both participants being drugged, against both their wills. And a miracle, it wasn’t incest either, since she’s her father’s daughter, even though everybody was quite certain she wasn’t! Was 2004 the year of new shows only revealing their corniness and conservatism after a while? (Not to mention the more obvious similitudes.)

The murderer’s identity is more interesting (although being a well-identified bad guy from the start, rather than one of Veronica’s friends or lovers, contributes to the story arc’s overall dullness) and the way they brought the character into the show, starting as a mere cameo and very organically gaining importance is an example to be shown in screenwriting schools. The thriller part, after the revelation, was a bit contrived, but I guess it was somewhat required.

And that cliffhanger… scary. Logan and her were so well together, and Duncan is so ugly! Now that she lost her virginity to him, and they’re not siblings anymore, I’m afraid we won’t be able to avoid it…

I’m in no particular hurry to see the next season. Well, of course, I want to see who’s at the door, but unless the writers made the best opening episode ever I’m unlikely to get really hooked to the second season. Solving all the mysteries in the first season’s finale was very bold and quite commendable, but I’m very sorry not to be able to say it was a good move for the show. There’s no reason to stop watching the show, now that we care for the characters and all, but I wouldn’t be that upset either if it just disappeared, and there better not be something great on another channel. Or maybe that’s just because I’m disappointed with what the revelations, uh… reveal as to the writers’ artistic amibitions, and where’s they’re likely to go with the show. This is not, as I thought, a precise blend of drama and comedy; it’s more an entertainment show with a bit of criminal mystery added to attract viewers.

By the way, I forgot to tell: I really like the actress playing Veronica, but she’s not a bit convincing when talking to the on-and-off boyfriend she thinks is responsible, and possibly guilty, of her rape. It’s odd she could play so well the intelligent girl who rationalizes everything but can still be emotional at times, and not be able to express real furor and urge to kill. But then, I’m sure not having that in her emotions palette only makes her a better person.

La concurrence sur les autres chaînes ? Il n'y en a pas vraiment... Même si effectivement cette série manque de profondeur, elle reste mille fois plus intéressante que 'Lost', vide interstellaire. :p
