“Libraries of the Rich and Famous”

I find Lagerfeld’s library insanely oppressive, and it may just be because the books are stacked horizontally. I wonder if it’s just a matter of usage or there’s something inherently more organized to the traditional shelves of vertical books — which can’t occur in nature and are an unstable equilibrium, as it were, whereas Lagerfeld’s arrangement just looks like a monumental heap of books that’s going to fall over you. (Look at the size of those chairs in the lower right corner for scale.)
