Hi! Do you remember blogs? Well, this used to be one. Now it just serves as an archive for my multiple Twitter accounts.

1 July 2015

Updated iTunes, still not sure what headaches enabling “iCloud Music Library” entails (got two Macs with different libraries and playlists).

The Watch made me want a Pebble. Apple Music’s implementation pushes me to try Spotify and Rdio again. I knew Apple was falling, but damn.

RT @neilcybart: I compare Steve Jobs/Apple movies to Pirates of Silicon Valley. Not sure if that movie can be beat.

Dark Matter has that cheap look traditional to Canadian sci-fi shows which could be fixed in two minutes in After Effects, but other than that it’s… okay.

I want a single-player RPG where your character — gender, appearance, stats, even sexuality — is randomly forced on you, Rust-style.

RT @neilcybart: This didn’t take long. Woz says he would never have said the things Seth Rogen said in the Steve Jobs trailer.

RT @mhbergen: Google’s trippy deep learning visual trick now open-sourced. Psychedelic furs #deepdream [googleresearch.blogspot.com] [pic.twitter.com]

Come on, Wayward Pines. You were doing so great, and now you’re resorting to the unfortunate teenaged coincidence?

3 July

RT @SamanthaZero: You know another great way to celebrate Independence Day? Buy an indie game while it’s not on sale: [indiependenceday.org] #IndiependenceDay

I might stick with Apple Music (for curation, and the convenience of everything in one place) if iTunes’ “New Station from…” starts working.

No one watches Hannibal for the fight scenes.

4 July

It’s not the kind of game I’d be likely to ever finish — let alone buy — but I’ve played the demo for Black Closet and it’s got lovely writing and solid mechanics

God damnit, Ark Survival Evolved just came out on Mac.

It’s fashionable to crap on Reddit these days and celebrate its demise, but that’s like congratulating yourself for how Usenet and IRC have become obsolete because you didn’t like a few of the newsgroups or channels available there. (Reddit is corporate-owned, but until the recent change in management it had very deliberately clung to the same freedom-of-speech and laissez-faire operative principles as those decentralized platforms, so the result was the same, good and bad.) If you curate just a little bit the list of subreddits included in your home page, Reddit is still the best place on the internet to have intelligent discussions — a site on which you can actually learn something in the comments section.

Just bought Ark Survival Evolved, then saw it supports VR, so now I’m considering saving it until I can get the full Jurassic experience.

5 July

Well, fuck, no one mentioned that Sense8 was the most depressing show ever.

RT @HaggardHawks: The term APHERCOTROPISM refers to the response an organism makes as it grows to overcome an obstacle in its way. [pic.twitter.com]

I’m worried Mr. Robot might be written by a Tyler Durden fan and I’m gonna have to regret enjoying the parts that I did.

Also, Coney Island’s Ferris wheel seems completely crazy and I don’t quite understand how it works but who the fuck wants to ride it?

I’m getting ridiculously hung up on the fact that there’s no way Mr. Robot’s Elliot could sit on the Wonder Wheel without jumping out of his skin every time a nearby pod thunderously rushes toward him. (But, hey, it sure makes for an impressive shot.)

RT @danthat: Ok, cool. Shut down Google’s Deep Dream mode. Shut it right down, right now [i.imgur.com]

Kingsman is a ridiculous, disgusting, awesome mess of a movie, but what it could really do without is the casual sexism.

Each movie Blomkamp makes is exponentially worse than the one before. I can’t bear to imagine what he’ll do to Alien.

Tumblr gif-quotes are gonna teach lip-reading to an entire generation.

The scripts for Other Space aren’t bad at all, but I can’t watch community theater sci-fi.

How much better would Siri be if she could hear you say “Thanks” after she’s answered a request?

I’m not sure if I’m tired because of the heat or Sense8 has thrown me into existential depression.

I can’t believe Unreal just carelessly opened the door to “well, you know, maybe she deserved her abusive husband.”

RT @flyosity: Every Batman and Superman actors’ faces blended together to create the perfect Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent. [pic.twitter.com]

RT @duncangeere: Pleasantly insane - a subreddit populated entirely by bots: [reddit.com]

9 July

I don’t understand at all the enthusiasm for Alphabear.

Two-Factor Authentication in iOS 9 and OS X El Capitan”: Looks like they’re getting rid of the extremely problematic recovery keys and using phone numbers instead, which is much better. I never thought they’d actually fix that issue, never mind so quickly.

I’d love to see more information about the manual process to authorize people locked out of their account, but the description at least makes it seem like they’re taking the responsibility seriously.

RT @asponge: life goals… be the first person found dead on a toilet wearing VR goggles?

I’m really glad I’ve had to switch to Pocket Casts. The iPhone app + polished web app is a great combo.

It wouldn’t occur to you to explain what “Tailored for you” means, would it

10 July

The Magic Circle may well have interesting mechanics, but the writing fails so much at capturing my interest that I didn’t finish the demo.

Her Story

It was hard to maintain my excitement when the game made its biggest reveal after only about fifteen minutes and exactly twelve searches. It seemed like an extremely obvious keyword, too, not like I was typing words at random, yet that made me skip so much filler, so many tiny twists, that I clearly wasn’t supposed to reach this particular video so early in the game.

I guess a concept so interesting and novel is worth it even if 10% of the players get the solution too quickly — but it sucks to be in those 10%. And you could say I am biased but, when you lay everything flat, the overarching story is… kind of dumb. In fact, even if it had taken me an hour or two to figure out what was happening, I suspect my reaction might have been more along the lines of “oh, fuck off” than “wow.” And I’m not a fan of the acting, even if it’s not nearly as bad or off-key as it seems in the trailer.

Still, some scenes are quite entertaining, the game’s cheap, and you probably won’t be as unlucky, nor as critical of the story, as I was.

I didn’t notice it immediately, but I love how much the “For You” tab emphasizes entire albums — considering the savage times we live in.

Somehow I haven’t seen any comments online about the new Ghostbusters switching to all-women yet sticking with the 75%-pasty-white formula.

11 July

RT @NathanDitum: Amy Poehler is great in this interview on women’s tendency to apologise, and why they shouldn’t. Also she’s just ace.

[theguardian.com]

How is it that iOS still doesn’t close UIPopoverControllers automatically for you when the iPad is rotated? Am I missing something?

13 July

Catastrophe is lovely, but I wonder how they’ll avoid having a newborn perpetually crying in the background of series 2.

The way iOS 9 blurs the lines between pages and apps, there’d be no better time to resurrect webOS’s all-tabs-in-the-app-switcher paradigm.

RT @IanMorris78: Pluto trivia: since it was first discovered in 1930 Pluto hasn’t yet completed an orbit of the sun. I love Pluto.

I’d love to know more about the first pharaoh who chose not to commission the construction of a pyramid bigger than his predecessors’.

15 July

RT @chartier: iOS 9 now lists “no cell coverage” among battery hogging tasks. Nice. [pic.twitter.com]

RT @tessthornton: I’ve solved spam and comment trolling. Introducing echochamber.js, all of the commenting, none of the comments. [github.com]

RT @jimmydivvy: NASA: Decade long flight across the solar system. Arrives within 72 seconds of predicted. No errors.

Me: undefined is not a function

As interesting as Sunset’s concept is, I hate the implementation. Not helped by how stuttery it is, even with lower visual settings. (Hello, migraine.)

It just breaks the immersion for me that the ‘game’ part of Sunset is, “he wants you to send a letter, so go look everywhere for a letter.”

RT @marcedwards: Ditto uses Photoshop layer names to add variables for many things. Great stuff, @ElliotEKJ! [casualnotebook.com] [i.imgur.com]

16 July

RT @olebegemann: “Services are not the favored child at Apple. … ICs know that, and it hits morale directly; I saw (and felt) this.” [news.ycombinator.com]

17 July

Mr. Robot is turning out to be obnoxious, and not just because of the increasingly insulting “is he or isn’t he” (which I hate either way).

Is there a version of BattleBots with just the fights? Because I want to watch them, but I can’t take the bullshit theatrics.

Wow. Just found out that someone blocked me, and I can read their tweets in Tweetbot — but not on the web. Is that a temporary bug in the Twitter API or a long-standing issue?

18 July

I’ve been watching the “DoubleFine Adventure!” documentary on YouTube and wondering how different my life would have been if my first jobs had been in offices full of smart, interesting people. There’s always the possibility I gave up a little too soon on the whole job thing. (Yes, it’s too late now.)

RT @neilcybart: The features found in the free tier of Apple Music will be enough for many people. That’s not necessarily a bad thing for Apple either.

RT @neilcybart: Here is the difference between free and paid tiers for Apple Music.

RT @CarpeAngela: Fuck baby centaurs that’d be scary af. Their horse half would be all robust with their baby half just dangling there.

I had never gotten agar.io to be playable on my Mac, but the iOS version runs great. So simple and addictive.

The best game-design lesson to take from agar.io: it isn’t frustrating to die, because you get to be small and fast again.

20 July

I know it’s petty to answer a support request with “as mentioned in the app’s help…” but I can’t stop myself.

RT @misterbrilliant: Another embarrassing u-turn for climate “scientists”. First they said June was the hottest month ever recorded. Now they’re saying it’s July

Today I opened Spotify, rediscovered there’s no album view for playlists, closed Spotify.

22 July

RT @orbuch: Finally — you can’t write App Store reviews from beta iOS.

RT @realmacsoftware: Deep Dreamer Public Beta now Available! [blog.realmacsoftware.com] #deepdream [pic.twitter.com]

C’est la première fois que je me fais mal au genou au point de me rouler par terre. Ca devient pire avec l’âge ?

23 July

RT @jaffathecake: G+ found their “download our app” interstitial caused 69% of users to abandon, rather than dl app or continue on site [googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.co.uk]

24 July

RT @danielpunkass: Limited time only: $AAPL stock is only $0.99/share. Trust me, Apple, the exposure is worth it. Market will appreciate true value over time.

Not a fan of Wayward Pines’ dumb action-movie finale, but the conclusion mostly made up for it.

26 July

RT @garoodotnet: Photoset: “Singapore’s surreal Supertree Grove and Cloud Forest” [tmblr.co]

RT @theguyliner: You should never date a man who screenshots a guy’s Grindr pics and tweets them out. It’s a serious dickmove.

27 July

I get the feeling that NBC execs saw the back half of Hannibal’s season 3 and figured the show was only gonna devolve further into ponderous wankery, so it was time to put it out of its misery.

28 July

Finally giving those two a try. But I got loaned the Watch first and it’s not gonna be much of a contest

RT @mdhughes: I want all my iThings to go DND when I take off my watch, and turn off DND when I put it on.

29 July

30 July

It’s amazing that online shopping can be successful considering the nightmarish clusterfuck that is home package delivery.

RT @kennwhite: New Windows 10 default: your machine & bandwidth is used to distribute Apps & updates to other PCs on the Internet. [pic.twitter.com]

31 July

Shame that Jurassic World is so painfully dumb, because most of the action is actually cool. And the running raptors are so damn pretty.

I honestly have no idea how Twitter could even begin to solve the issue, but fav- and follow-spam is killing all the damn fun.
