Hi! Do you remember blogs? Well, this used to be one. Now it just serves as an archive for my multiple Twitter accounts.

2 July

@CryptoNature:

At a wildlife rehab facility I met two crows that said, “caw” in a human accent. They said it like a human reading the word “caw” aloud. The tech shook her head and said, “they’re making fun of us. People say ‘caw’ to them all day, so they’ve started impersonating us.” I <3 crows

@elkmovie:

Here’s my issue with PWA (and every other hopeful idea for how to break the Apple / Google app duopoly): an awful lot of the apps out now are products of an earlier, more profitable era, and would not make financial sense to write/port again from scratch.

Homophobie !

4 July

@dhh:

I can’t imagine a worse job than working on self-driving AI algorithms. If you do the very best, you’re simply fulfilling the expected prophesy of technology. If you make the slightest mistake, you’ve killed people.

5 July

@temptoetiam:

@KristinBriney:

There is one correct way to write a date and it’s YYYY-MM-DD. [twitter.com]

@Addison_Crow:

Wondered why the car blowers didn’t seem very effective then realised half of them were set to ‘email’ instead of ‘bacon’.

@mshelton:

Reading a paper on misconceptions about private browsing.

Oh dear.

I’m not sure what I deleted that justifies my fan running at max rpm for half an hour and I can’t open the Trash to check what is/was in there and I’m a little scared

@edyong209:

Spiders can “balloon” by pointing their bums at the sky, releasing silk, and taking off. People often say the silk catches on the wind. But a new study points to a more incredible explanation: [theatlantic.com]

@PeterAlexander:

JUST IN: Federal judge agrees to delay next meeting about extending deadline to reunite 101 children under the age of 5 until Monday because Trump administration lawyer has “dog sitting responsibilities” this weekend.

@virgile_:

[liberation.fr]

@LMMyles:

In Babylon 5 the Minbari have this thing where the leaders of each political side get in a death beam and the side whose leader doesn’t run away before they die wins. Now, I’m not saying there aren’t moral problems with this setup, but maybe we could try it for a bit?

I’ve been cat-and-house-sitting in presence of a Google Home since yesterday and, damn, do you quickly get used to the convenience.

Good thing I’m too involved in the Apple ecosystem to get a Google Home, and not enough to be interested in a HomePod (for lack of Spotify).

10 July

@DanielPink:

After the shift to an open-plan office space, people spend 73% less time in face-to-face interactions — and 67% more time using email.

@harleivy:

in russia, the act of displaying the LGBT flag in public can get you arrested. so these 6 activists from latin america resorted to creativity: wearing uniforms from their countries’ football teams, they turned themselves into the flag and walked around moscow with pride. 🏳️‍🌈

11 July

@brainpicker:

I have been waiting for this for years: @zoecello, whose music has been the single most steadfast soundtrack of my writing hours, has a new record out, and it’s beyond beautiful: [music.zoekeating.com] And she’s kindly offering a track from it: [music.zoekeating.com]

@wallacetim:

The details in this “Bird’s Eye View of Manhattan” from roughly 1910 are 👀. [loc.gov]

@DjangoWexler:

The thing about most writing advice (remove adverbs, “kill your darlings”, “write what you know”, etc) is that it’s meant for Creative Writing teachers to give 101-level students. It’s a corrective for common newbie mistakes, not intended as eternal verities.

@MerriamWebster:

16 July

@Andreo_Ch:

@bbplwp:

Are you telling me there is still no UIGestureRecognizer for 3D Touch?

Yesterday: Dammit, the keyboard isn’t showing up and I forgot my USB cable at home so I can’t check if it’s my app or just the Simulator that’s broken.

Today: Yup, it was the Simulator.

(In retrospect, I’ll admit I could also have rebooted.)

@Bernstein:

A year ago, a pro-Trump, anti-SJW media fixture stabbed his father to death while calling him a “leftist pedophile.” The killer was my source. I went in search of answers. Here’s my story, which I’ve been working on for six months: [buzzfeed.com]

Great optical illusion: “All the dots in the background are the same colour.”

@kylebrussell:

Watchmen had it right. If the biggest problem facing humanity in the 21st century is our own tribalism, we need everyone to think of humanity as the in-group. Say it with me now:

@BigZaphod:

Twitter is going to start to “flicker” the endpoints that are going away on August 16th - so prepare for periodic disruption and unreliably until it finally just stops, I guess. 😢 [twitter.com]

24 July

Yes, you can manage it for yourself with a UITableView, but that’s a bunch of glitch-prone code (handling first load, reloads, infinite scrolling) that would be much better handled by the API.

@saladinahmed:

a buddy broke down for me recently just how crucial hate clicks have become for online revenue models and honestly I’ve started reacting differently to transparently stupid pieces.

just plain not sharing/discussing these shitty takes does them more damage than any retort.

@SoeurFoune:

There’s something very, very wrong with this sentence. It’s a MacBook PRO, for crying out loud.

25 July

I can’t wait for the Mac to get Face ID so the OS can send keystrokes to whichever window I’m looking at. (Of course they’re never gonna bother to implement that because that wouldn’t apply to iOS.)

@HilltopWarrior:

A sobering study showing that UberPool and LyftLine add to congestion at the same toxic levels as solo rides, siphoning away riders from public transit and failing to reduce car ownership, to say nothing of the poor working conditions their drivers face. [washingtonpost.com]

— Manger ! Manger ! Manger !

Six years later, this Xcode workaround is still necessary to find out where in your app you have an out-of-bounds error [blog.manbolo.com]

@ff00aa:

I’ve probably guessed what this method does but geez this API has been out for a year

@sannewman:

16. Anyway, in my opinion, this kind of bullshit is a major reason girls, especially straight girls, give up doing cool things. Instead of getting glory, you get relentlessly patronized & insulted by the very people who are supposed to find you sexy BECAUSE you do cool things.

@TechnicallyRon:

JUST ANOTHER TWEET COMPLAINING ABOUT THE HEAT. I’M NOT SORRY. IT IS TOO WARM. I HAVEN’T SLEPT IN SIX WEEKS. SLEEP IS JUST LYING DOWN BUT HOT. THE AIR IS A THICK NIGHTMARE. COLD IS A MEMORY NOW. WE KILLED THE PLANET SO NOW THE PLANET IS TRYING TO KILL US.

The real test of Apple Pay’s convenience will be how long I’m willing to deal with the cashier calling out to her colleague: “Look, the gentleman’s about to pay with his watch.” I’m on day 2 (just opened an N26 account for the privilege). For now: still worth it.

29 July

@AlSweigart:

Incorrect code comments.

Useless code comments.

Uncommented code.

Try No Man’s Sky again, they said. It’s good now, they said. Not solo it’s not. (I’m giving Normal mode a try; haven’t restarted Creative yet. But if you still have to refuel your devices and ships in Creative I’m gonna rage-quit again and swear off this game again.)

@haydencd:

Four Last Things, one of 2017’s best surprises, is getting a Renaissance-era sequel-y thing. Hell yeah. [youtu.be]

31 July

Finally got to play with Tilt Brush’s hull brushes and once again I am wowed by what that team has accomplished. First VR modeling app that actually makes me want to use it. (Pity I’ve changed my focus and don’t have time to work on 3D projects for a while.)

I’m back home and I miss telling Google to turn off the lights at night.

That would be a terrible reason to invite Google’s ears into my bedroom.

On the other hand I have no conversations in here to be overheard.

@tuCpakoa:

@BenRiceM:

So for the next two months, Obscura can be downloaded for free via the Apple Store App
