Hi! Do you remember blogs? Well, this used to be one. Now it just serves as an archive for my multiple Twitter accounts.
It’s such an eerie feeling when I wake up after forgetting to charge my iPhone 7 and the Home button isn’t a button anymore.
I’m cat-sitting for (French) friends and it had never occurred to me to even try talking to their Google Home in English. It works!
the left needs to be studying katrina. as climate breakdown progresses, katrina aftermath will become the normal state of affairs. we need to be preparing for this.
also: i knew so little of this. imagine if the history of the katrina response was taught in schools?
Once again, #Justice4Velociraptor.
How did we reach the point where civilization would decide to reintroduce, in 2019, hourly audible chimes in wristwatches?
PencilKit is a huge Finally for me. Having consistent UI across apps is gonna make a huge difference to how integrated the Pencil feels.
The fact that Apple’s demonstration of new iPad typing gestures started with an “oops” points to the fundamental limitation of using gestures for everything, not to mention the inherent lack of intuitive behavior. #WWDC19
It’s incredibly weird to finally see Apple introduce actual pro Mac hardware again. I’m having flashbacks to feelings I haven’t had in many, many, many years.
These accessibility improvements are downright wild! ❤️
You could use an iPhone to capture an actor’s facial performance, and now you can do motion capture too, straight from system APIs 🙌
I’m going to make every effort to avoid thinking about whether an equivalent of SwiftUI could just as well have been made with Objective-C or not, and accept that it’s time to switch to Swift. (Ugh.)
Very excited to find out all the things designers will manage to think of that break the assumptions built into SwiftUI!
I’ll probably never be able to afford a Mac Pro — and it’s ugly as sin — but it managed to make me more optimistic about the Mac than I’ve been in years. It even put me in such a good mood that I’m not griping about finally switching to Swift. Funny how halo products work.
Swift UI looks amazing, if you want to do something simple.
However, most declarative UI frameworks rapidly fall down if you want to do anything custom or outside it’s assumptions.
I wonder how SwiftUI will fare if you want to build “Magic Move” style screen to screen transitions [twitter.com]
It was undeniably fun seeing Apple unveil the McLaren of Macs. Fun has been missing in the Mac hardware world for a long time.
You could use an iPhone to capture an actor’s facial performance, and now you can do motion capture too, straight from system APIs 🙌
This is interesting…

This is a fascinating iOS 13 feature. So it seems like your iPhone will charge to 80%, then finish the last 20% just in time for you to wake up #WWDC19
This is a computer for movie studios to buy in bulk for employees, not for the independent professional. The independent professional is the demographic that built Apple, but also the one that has been neglected by Apple the most and it seems like that trend will continue.
I’m actually incredibly disappointed that SwiftUI seems to be a new UI framework, not written on top of UIKit.
Declarative UI frameworks are great for simple straight forward UIs that fully their preconceptions. But if you want to violate those they are a massive pain!
If it was built on top of a normal imperative UI framework you could drop down to the real power of a normal framework instead of dancing through hundreds of hoops to make it work.
I’m fearful this will regress iOS UI into more bland plain simple UIs even further than iOS7.
Hahaha absolutely fucking not! Thank you iOS 13 for your improved privacy! 💖💖💖
We entered WWDC without Apple offering a modular desktop that meets our needs, and we’re leaving WWDC without Apple offering a modular desktop that meets our needs. They clearly don’t have enough developers in their focus group, so the Mac Pro is a major failure in that respect [twitter.com]
As someone who tried to get Sign in with your Microsoft account to happen during the Windows 8 era, I’m quite familiar with how much of a hurdle it is to provide enough value to sites/apps that they adopt an identity solution.
Apple being able to mandate adoption is the killer.
I wonder if the ubiquity of mobile micropayments plays a part, making it possible for listeners to pay for individual episodes before deciding to subscribe.
Using a mouse with the #iPadPro on #iOS13 is a truly transformative experience. The level of customisations is already incredible. This is what you can do with a 5 buttons #logitech mouse /cc @viticci @stroughtonsmith
If Batman was real, he’d probably be exactly like Elon Musk.
Bruce Wayne would throw an online tantrum where he calls Commissioner Gordon a pedophile because he didn’t ok his plan to rescue the mayor in an armored bat suit, and Wayne Enterprises would lose stock value overnight.
Damn, it had never occurred to me that the Finder could group files by color. It’s not perfect but it almost makes up for having moved color indicators to a small, unassuming, utterly useless dot all those years ago.
Apple has removed all the VR-related artwork and marketing material from their product pages. If nothing is announced tonight, or in the session schedule after the keynote, VR on the Mac is most likely dead.
This is a gut reaction but I still don’t think multitasking on iPad is really ‘fixed’. I think the core problems remain, and the new capabilities also introduce overlay additional complexity to the same (flawed, imo) spatial model.
At this point iPadOS is so full of undiscoverable gestures and tricks it feels like we have long past the point where trying to avoid the complexity of a file system, window manager and system menu has led to a much more complex patchwork of ‘simple’ alternatives.
When I installed the new macOS beta it gave me a warning that Steam was 32-bit and wouldn’t run anymore. I re-downloaded it, now it’s 64-bit and… the interface is a lot more responsive.
Has Steam’s auto-update neglected to give me the faster 64-bit version for a whole year?
Stadia’s positioning seems to be a confused mess of nonsense. Every strength it has is undermined by some equally absurd restriction or caveat, and it seems to have no idea who its audience is.
Surprise: Journey is still an beautiful game. Great sense of loss when the helpful anonymous player sat down and disappeared. And I guess the devs have turned the sand physics to 11, so there’ll be room for the game to be even more impressive when I get an RTX 2080?
I wonder if SwiftUI’s declarative nature would enable custom watch faces on watchOS without Apple having to run your app constantly or have it show stale data when presented
Not that I care, really, but Respawn can’t have produced a game as boring and bland as the Fallen Order gameplay reveal looks?
As far as I’m concerned the only acceptable lightsaber game would let you destroy the entire environment with accurate physics, instead of adding neon lights to sword combat. But I guess that wouldn’t sell more than (or maybe even as much as) Fallen Order or the Battlefronts.
This made my day 😂
I’d never have bought it but I find myself quite surprised to discover that I like Everything a lot.
Feels like a bit of waste to play it without LSD, though.
This baby has captured my entire music aesthetic and is much better at it than me:
With a new Ghostbusters movie in production, I hope you all don’t need me to tell you what a perfect IP that is for a Pokémon Go type of game?
Don’t ruin it.

I have one space with a multi-column Tweetbot window, and one space with a detached Tweetbot column side-by-side with Firefox (I’m using full/split-screen more and more). I keep Cmd-W-ing the Tweetbot column and having to repeat the whole setup because I meant to close a tab.

I’m going to spoil it for you because it’s so damn important.
Microsoft did a scientific study - based on MS Vista code and found that the best predictor of bugs was:
More people = worse code
More departments = worse code
Higher turnover = worse code
I’d actually never noticed how similar “Vive” is to “Valve” until Valve started competing with Vive and I had to tell them apart when scanning my news feeds.

i don’t kill my darlings. i cut and paste my darlings into a separate document, assuring each of them i’ll find them a more suitable home, and then let them die of natural causes.
I’ve always been put off by the artificiality of turn-by-turn combat, but the Superhot conceit might just redeem tactics games for me.
I have less than zero interest in John Wick, so I won’t play that particular game, but I look forward to playing games inspired by it 😬
Don’t call nazis nazis on this site. Or you’ll be banned. For saying nazis.
The nazis, of course, can stay. Because they’re not saying nazis.
This is a good system.
Every app will grow until it includes… messaging, and a full browser.
I freaking loved Dropbox. A magical, unobtrusive folder that synced and was easily shared.
But Steve Jobs was right, that’s a feature not a product, so they had to bloat it if they wanted to stay independent. [twitter.com]
Doesn’t look like I can cancel Dropbox auto-renewal without immediately losing my 2TB. My subscription is annual, and renewed in April. Still might do it, because I’m tired of their bullshit.
I never wanted to rely on Box because I was certain they would someday renege on the lifetime free 50GB I got when I bought a webOS tablet a century ago, but somehow they still haven’t.
People seem to think Oculus wants to sell devices, or at least apps, but Facebook cares about one thing only: to lock as many eyeballs into their ecosystem as they can. Officially allowing users to stream Steam games on the Quest would do the opposite of that.
This is terrible. I need to step away… from everything… for just a bit.
Horror Tip: A horrible monster isn’t scary unless it represents a horrifying idea. The monster only works as an ambassador of a bigger conceptual terror - tip of the iceberg. Make sure there’s more beneath the surface.
WHO even thinks about creating something like this?!?!!????
macOS has become the OS of permission prompts and password entry fields.
Someone really needs to point out to Apple continually asking users for the system password is a security anti-pattern.
In the end user get so used to it they just type it an whenever asked without thinking
Of course Apple’s solution to that is just to limit what users are ever allowed to do, even after jumping through all the permission prompts (as SIP and the like show)
Designers hate information density and Pocket’s new web version only shows five and a half items on my Mac’s screen in list view. So much white space, so many blank thumbnails. Guess I’ll check back with Instapaper?
Nope, four and a half articles on screen 🤦🏻♂️
I had never heard of this kind of games: a story narrated on cassette tapes, which you paused when the hero had a problem. You discussed solutions, decided on one, then resumed the audio story, which considered the problem solved- without acknowledging how, of course. #NarraScope
When I played the alpha of Outer Wilds all those years ago it was so janky I gave up before even making it off the planet. That did not prepare me for how great the finished game is.
I don’t remember another game ever conveying so well the excitement and immensity of space exploration. (Which is ironic considering the size of this particular star system.) Or simply made me so nervous at the thought of first taking off.
Since I’ve uninstalled Dropbox my Mac manages to reboot completely instead of getting stuck on a black screen 😲︎
This is the best presentation I’ve ever seen.
Sorry I lied — THIS is the best presentation I’ve ever seen
I’ve had this idea for a while but am in no way capable of implementing it: a decentralized social network (i.e. Mastodon) with a global user directory on the blockchain. Your identity is secure, you can change servers any time. (Could also work for email?)
No crypto mining, no intentionally expensive proof-of-work wasting immense amounts of energy; just a bunch of people and entities contributing processing power because they want the system to work. (Which seems to be how Libra works? tho it’ll be more centralized and for profit.)
This looks fantastic.
Still emotional over finishing Outer Wilds last night. Might end up being my favorite science-fiction game ever: not only beautiful world-building, but such a perfect harmony between the game mechanics (which are great in their own right) and the story and themes.
My only regret is that I got a few minor spoilers because I needed to google my way forward a couple times, which wouldn’t have happened if the game had an optional hint system. (Instead of the ship’s computer occasionally explaining things you had seen but not understood yet.)
I mean, my true only regret is that I can’t erase my memory of the game and rediscover this universe again.
Also, I won’t be able to play another exploration game for a while. (Sorry, Heaven’s Vault.)
I’m watching gameplay videos of the alpha and it’s funny that NPC dialogue, my main complaint about Outer Wilds as it was just interactive and reactive enough to leave me wanting for much more, seems to be the only part of the game that wasn’t already in the alpha.

I went to say my final goodbye to Solanum, but she didn’t understand and kept gesturing at the wall 😢

I’m always amazed by how poorly Pokémon Go informs players of special events. You get a link to a blog post a few days before, and then… nothing. Not even a small banner to say “the egg-hatching distance bonus is active now!”
And even the Twitter account isn’t much better.
People make fun of how long/verbose ObjC classes and method names are, but they are incredibly easy to read.
Swift traded readability for less typing. Considering code is written once (mostly with auto fill) and read numerous times, that’s a terrible trade off.

Since I googled a video on hand-sewing clothes last week Pinterest has been showing me sewing / darning tricks, and 1) some of these are proper sorcery 2) I’m getting really uncomfortable about how much Pinterest’s recommendation engine knows, and uses, what I’m doing elsewhere.
I hate when I think someone is cool and then I see them tweeting at airlines about their flight being delayed.

As of iOS 13/iPadOS, you can once again add Game Center friends.
TIL: doing a “secure erase” is no longer considered by Apple to be secure. I noticed Disk Utility didn’t really do anything the last time I tried it, and found this is in the diskutil man page. Instead: encrypt your disks.

ObjC had weird syntax but was actually very simple and easy to understand.
Swift (initially seems to) have very simple syntax with a mountain of complexity and weird syntax hiding just under the surface.
Start digging into how things work and things get complex quick!
Some on Jony Ive’s now former team don’t even think anything will feel immediately different. That’s how disconnected Ive became in recent years. Usually when a leader resigns, there’s a change.
That change actually happened on Memorial Day in 2015, when the stock market was closed, Apple said it “promoted” Ive to chief design officer. That was actually him officially becoming less involved than ever.
