These accessibility improvements are downright wild! ❤️

You could use an iPhone to capture an actor’s facial performance, and now you can do motion capture too, straight from system APIs 🙌

I’m going to make every effort to avoid thinking about whether an equivalent of SwiftUI could just as well have been made with Objective-C or not, and accept that it’s time to switch to Swift. (Ugh.)

@BigZaphod:

Very excited to find out all the things designers will manage to think of that break the assumptions built into SwiftUI!

I’ll probably never be able to afford a Mac Pro — and it’s ugly as sin — but it managed to make me more optimistic about the Mac than I’ve been in years. It even put me in such a good mood that I’m not griping about finally switching to Swift. Funny how halo products work.

@Freerunnering:

Swift UI looks amazing, if you want to do something simple.

However, most declarative UI frameworks rapidly fall down if you want to do anything custom or outside it’s assumptions.

@jedmund:

This is a computer for movie studios to buy in bulk for employees, not for the independent professional. The independent professional is the demographic that built Apple, but also the one that has been neglected by Apple the most and it seems like that trend will continue.

@Freerunnering:

I’m actually incredibly disappointed that SwiftUI seems to be a new UI framework, not written on top of UIKit.

Declarative UI frameworks are great for simple straight forward UIs that fully their preconceptions. But if you want to violate those they are a massive pain!

@Freerunnering:

If it was built on top of a normal imperative UI framework you could drop down to the real power of a normal framework instead of dancing through hundreds of hoops to make it work.

I’m fearful this will regress iOS UI into more bland plain simple UIs even further than iOS7.

This is a gut reaction but I still don’t think multitasking on iPad is really ‘fixed’. I think the core problems remain, and the new capabilities also introduce overlay additional complexity to the same (flawed, imo) spatial model.

Outer Wilds (PC) — 10/10

Still emotional over finishing Outer Wilds last night. Might end up being my favorite science-fiction game ever: not only beautiful world-building, but such a perfect harmony between the game mechanics (which are great in their own right) and the story and themes.

My only regret is that I got a few minor spoilers because I needed to google my way forward a couple times, which wouldn’t have happened if the game had an optional hint system. (Instead of the ship’s computer occasionally explaining things you had seen but not understood yet.)

I mean, my true only regret is that I can’t erase my memory of the game and rediscover this universe again.

Also, I won’t be able to play another exploration game for a while. (Sorry, Heaven’s Vault.)

I’m watching gameplay videos of the alpha and it’s funny that NPC dialogue, my main complaint about Outer Wilds as it was just interactive and reactive enough to leave me wanting for much more, seems to be the only part of the game that wasn’t already in the alpha.

TIL: doing a “secure erase” is no longer considered by Apple to be secure. I noticed Disk Utility didn’t really do anything the last time I tried it, and found this is in the diskutil man page. Instead: encrypt your disks.

@axelsimon:

@deverly_b:

Depuis vendredi :

@mcclure111:

Clearly what Twitter’s doing is finding people with low-flow timelines & filling space in with “high engagement” tweets (“things you’re likely to reply to too”). This tells us 2 things

- It’s not just “favs are RTs” now; REPLIES might be RTs too

- TWITTER HAS AUTOMATED PILEONS

macOS is still in a better state than Windows, but Windows is moving in a better direction than macOS. [twitter.com]

@Freerunnering:

ObjC had weird syntax but was actually very simple and easy to understand.

Swift (initially seems to) have very simple syntax with a mountain of complexity and weird syntax hiding just under the surface.

Start digging into how things work and things get complex quick!

@markgurman:

Some on Jony Ive’s now former team don’t even think anything will feel immediately different. That’s how disconnected Ive became in recent years. Usually when a leader resigns, there’s a change.

@markgurman:

That change actually happened on Memorial Day in 2015, when the stock market was closed, Apple said it “promoted” Ive to chief design officer. That was actually him officially becoming less involved than ever.
