Primary colors are not a physical but rather a biological concept, based on the physiological response of the human eye to light. Light represents a continuous spectrum of wavelengths, such that being “primary” is not an intrinsic property of the color itself. The human eye contains receptors called cones which normally respond to specific wavelengths of red, green, and blue light. Humans and other species with three such types of color receptors are known as trichromats. […] To generate optimal color ranges for species other than humans, other additive primary colors would have to be used. For species known as tetrachromats with four different color receptors, one would use four primary colors.

In other words, our eye works just like a CCD camera, and our human-engineered TVs and computers wouldn’t quite “work” for birds and marsupials.

Want to know when I post new content to my blog? It's a simple as registering for free to an RSS aggregator (Feedly, NewsBlur, Inoreader, …) and adding www.garoo.net to your feeds (or www.garoo.net if you want to subscribe to all my topics). We don't need newsletters, and we don't need Twitter; RSS still exists.

Un truc m'échappe : je comprends que la lumière est un spectre continu, tout ça. Mais quand on parle de couleurs primaires, c'est surtout en peinture pour désigner les trois couleurs qui permettent d'obtenir (par un mélange bien physique) toutes les autres nuances. Donc je trouve l'explication un peu bizarre.

Soit, nous avons trois capteurs différents. Il s'agit là de notre mécanique interne. Quel rapport ? Ou il n'est pas censé y avoir de rapport ?

Puis c'est technologique. Tu dois mettre ce post ailleurs. Tu cherches vraiment à nous embrouiller. :p

J'aurais plutôt dit : les appareils photos et tout le matos vidéo fonctionnent comme notre oeil, non ?

Bruno Vandelli avait raison alors, lorsqu'il s'exclamait "Quadricolor, comme les quatre couleurs primaires !" :)
